The "bot" has become more prevalent in the past few weeks. Bots are usually installed by automated "scan and exploit" tools which are constantly scanning the Internet. Many computers are exploited daily through common system misconfigurations: the lack of a good password, open shares, the lack of anti-virus scanning software and no firewall on your computer.

We recommend that you enable the Internet Connection Firewall under Windows XP (if you run Windows XP) by following our tutorial titled Enabling the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall. Having a firewall enabled on your computer will increase your defenses against attacks against you. Also, visit Secure Software for pointers to free anti-virus scanners, security tools, etc.

    Network Suspension Info

Have you been suspended from the university network due to a security violation? Please read the Network Suspension tutorial to recover quickly and restore Internet connectivity.
