    Incident Response

The DePaul University Incident Response Team (DIRT) takes it's direction from the Computer Security Response Security Team when dealing with computer and information security breaches. The team retains a group of core members and assigns extra resources, as required, in the event of needing to mitigate ongoing attacks or recover from an incident. This recovery may take on many forms ranging from port deactivations to details forensic recovery. DIRT members are skilled in many aspects of technology and report DMCA violation notices to the Office of General Counsel.

If you have recently been broken into or had a machine compromised on your network, we urge you to contact us through the Information Security Team. We may be able to track down more details pertaining to the incident by using the expertise that our experience has given us. If you are currently involved in an incident and would like our assistance, please e-mail security@depaul.edu immediately regarding the details of the situation. Also, check out the Incident Response tutorial to understand what your response should be when suspicious of a computer or information security breach.

DIRT belongs to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), a global colloquium of computer and emergency Response teams. DePaul University was accepted as a full participating member into the Forum of Incident Response Security Teams coalition in November, 2000. FIRST brings together a number of computer emergency response teams from academic, commercial and government agencies, and aims to provide better channels of communication for incident response. FIRST also promotes rapid response to incidents through the sharing of information between teams.

The DePaul FIRST team, also known as the DePaul Incident Response Team (DIRT), is a full acting member of FIRST. We use the information gathered from FIRST to assist the university community, and act as a liaison for the community on defining the university's stance on computer and information security.

Contact our FIRST team representative by sending an email to first-rep(at)depaul.edu.
