Tableau

OverView:
  • In 2009, DePaul’s Enrollment Management Division purchased the Tableau reporting system to provide the University with enhanced reporting and data visualization capabilities. Then, in 2010, DePaul expanded its capabilities with the Tableau system by purchasing a site license for Tableau. This gives DePaul the option to provide any staff or faculty member a license to access the DePaul Tableau server and view reports.
System Updates:
  • As with all software vendors, Tableau makes updates to their systems to address bugs and add new features and options. While Tableau Software is frequently releasing updates to their software, because we are committed to providing as high a quality and to minimize system disruption as much as possible, Information Services only plans to update the server twice each year. If you have questions about what the plans are to update the Tableau system, please send an email request to tabadmin@depaul.edu .

Requesting Access:
  • o There are 2 different types of users in Tableau. There are report consumers, who can log into the server and access any report to which they have been granted permissions, and there are report creators. DePaul’s license with Tableau does not provide for additional report creators. In order to become a report creator, you will need to work with your budget manager to purchase a license. Please see below for more details regarding report creator access. Whichever type of user you will be, to get access to the Tableau server, you will need to send a request to the Tableau Administrator at tabadmin@depaul.edu . Please provide your user name, and what department you are in. There are data owners in each college and functional area, so the Tableau administrator will work with those data owners to determine which report security group you will be granted access to.

Report Creators:
  • Install client - If you have completed your purchase of a Tableau Desktop Creator license, your next step is to install the client software on your desktop system. It is extremely important that you install the correct version. If you go to the Tableau Software website, chances are good that the version of the desktop software you can access there is newer than the server version we are currently running in our production environment, and may not be compatible. To get access to the current version of the desktop software, there is a directory on the network servers that you can access here: H:\install\Windows\TableauDesktop. You may also find Tableau specific database drivers at H:\install\Windows\TableauDrivers.
  • Publication Guide/Instructions – Tableau provides great flexibility in how reports can be secured and updated. Information Services has worked with various users from different departments in the University and has published detailed standards for publishing reports to the server. These standards outline how to get database access and approval, how to publish reports, what security access to grant, etc. You may access the report publication standard here:

Support:
  • Support and Requests - If you experience any issues with the Tableau server, or need any other support, such as having your account access adjusted or details changed, you may send a request to tabadmin@depaul.edu.
  • o Training – Tableau Software has created a wealth of training materials that you can access on their website at http://www.tableausoftware.com/learn. If you need training or details on how to read or interact with a specific report that someone has published, please contact that person for additional details.
