Host of NPR's Latino USA to speak at DePaul University April 24

CHICAGO — DePaul University’s School for New Learning will welcome the host of NPR’s “Latino USA,” Maria Hinojosa, for a presentation on April 24 titled, “The Growing Number of Latinos in the U.S. and Its Implications.” The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., after which, Hinojosa will give a lecture and host a question and answer session at University Center, Lake Room, 525 S. State St., Chicago. Admission is free and open to the public; however, RSVP is requested at http://bit.ly/1lujB4x.

“Maria is a nationally recognized leader in her field of Latino studies,” said Marisa Alicea, dean of the School for New Learning. “To afford our students and local community an opportunity to learn more about her research and the growing Latino population in the U.S. was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

Hinojosa’s talk is part of the School for New Learning’s ongoing Women in Leadership series.

Born in Mexico City and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Hinojosa is an esteemed journalist with a career spanning over 25 years, most of which has been spent documenting Latinos in America. She has won four Emmys, the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged, the Studs Terkel Community Media Award, and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary for her groundbreaking "Child Brides: Stolen Lives."

She also is the president and CEO of Futuro Media Group and anchor for WGBH/La Plaza’s talk show “Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One.” Her internationally acclaimed work has inspired policy reform concerning issues such as child marriage and incarcerated youth in the Latino community. The broadcaster serves as executive producer and anchor of “America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa,” a television series airing this fall on PBS and the World Channel.

Last year, Hinojosa was appointed DePaul’s Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair, a position created more than a decade ago for distinguished Latino writers. The chair is named in honor of the 17th-century Mexican nun who is revered as one of the earliest advocates for a woman’s right to education. In 2010, DePaul University awarded Hinojosa with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Celebrating 40 years of adult student success, the School for New Learning provides a distinctive approach to learning for adults, with customized programs that build upon abilities and experiences, add knowledge and develop skills to help achieve personal and professional goals. The school has a fundamental belief in learning from experience. More at http://www.snl.depaul.edu.
