CHICAGO — Due to travel delays, dangerous road conditions and the heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather predicted for the Chicago area by the National Weather Service, DePaul University is canceling classes for Monday, Jan. 6. All DePaul Chicago and suburban campuses will be closed. Employees, except those in essential roles, do not need to report to work.

“We have been monitoring weather conditions since Friday and have stayed in touch with local transportation officials in order to make a decision on closing the university and canceling classes,” said Bob Janis, vice president of Facility Operations, and a member of DePaul’s Executive Emergency Response Team.

“We have heard from many students and staff who are having problems getting back to the city for the start of school from the holidays due to flight cancelations, train cancelations and dangerous roadways,” he noted.

Monday was scheduled to be the first regular day of the winter quarter with students and faculty members returning to campus from the holiday break. Instead, the plan is to reopen and resume classes on Tuesday, Janis said. For updates, go to www.depaul.edu.

All buildings on the Lincoln Park Campus, with some exceptions, will be closed on Monday. Residence halls are open. On Monday, the Student Center will serve food from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center also will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The DePaul Center on the Loop Campus, as well as the Daley Building, will be open due to the tenants we have in those buildings, Janis said. All other Loop Campus buildings, and the DePaul offices and classrooms in the DePaul Center and the Daley Building, will be closed.
