Business ethics through corporate leadership: DePaul confab

CHICAGO — Chief executives from KPMG, ComEd and Unilever are among corporate leaders who will speak at the 20th annual International Vincentian Business Ethics conference during the corporate morning program held by DePaul University on Oct. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For two decades, DePaul’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics in the Driehaus College of Business has sponsored the annual business ethics conference at alternating locations, in collaboration with New York-based Niagara University and St. John’s University.

The conference brings together members of the academic and corporate communities to examine how business ethics are impacted by dynamic issues of financial crisis, human rights, globalization and corporate culture.

Scheduled to speak at the corporate plenary session, “Corporate Governance and the 21st Century” are: Kathy Hannan, national managing partner for corporate responsibility and diversity of KPMG; Anne Pramaggiore, chief executive officer of Com Ed; and Steve Williams, retired general counsel and chief legal officer for Unilever.

“Business ethics has to do with what companies ought to do, not always what they do. This conference looks at what should businesses be doing, how they can do it better, what they should not be doing, how do they avoid problems and how do you create a corporate culture that encourages doing good and doing well,” said Patricia Werhane, Wicklander Chair of Business Ethics and managing director of the Institute for Business and Professional Ethics at DePaul University.

This year, the first International Award for Corporate Ethics and Excellence will be presented to “an outstanding company that embeds ethics in everything they do and are still profitable,” said Werhane.

The morning sessions will take place in the Grand Ballroom at the Standard Club, 320 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago. To register for the session: vincentianethicsconference.eventbrite.com. See more at: http://bit.ly/19ZzwAw.
