Bloomberg Businessweek ranks DePaul's undergraduate business program top Chicago school

CHICAGO — DePaul University’s Driehaus College of Business has the highest ranked program in Chicago, according to Bloomberg Businessweek’s national rankings of undergraduate business programs.

Driehaus, which rose seven places to No. 60, was the second-highest ranked Illinois business college after University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (No. 26). The ranked programs were among the 124 colleges across the country that made the final round of the rankings.

Student comments on the Businessweek website gave high marks to Driehaus faculty members. “Our program is taught by members of active Chicago business communities,” one business student wrote.

“Business professors at DePaul University are successful business owners, consultants, entrepreneurs, and, even, CEOs (many times over in many cases),” the student wrote. “I do not think I have had a single professor who has not risen to the top of their field. They offer unique insight that the average business professor simply could not.”

The rankings are based on measures of student satisfaction, post-graduation outcomes and academic quality. Key factors affecting each college’s score were student and corporate recruiter surveys, median salary data for recent graduates and academic quality data (including average SAT scores, average class size, internships and other measures).

“We’re honored to be ranked so highly among these prestigious institutions,” said Ray Whittington, dean of the Driehaus College of Business. “It’s a statement about the quality of our faculty and undergraduate programs. It is recognition of the value we provide to employers and graduates of our programs.”

The Businessweek ranking is the latest this year for the Driehaus College of Business, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary at DePaul. The undergraduate accounting program recently was ranked among the best in the nation in a survey conducted of heads of corporate tax departments by JobsInTax, which also gave the No. 1 spot last year to DePaul’s Master of Science in Taxation program.

And the Driehaus College of Business  was ranked one of the country’s 25 best academic institutions for entrepreneurship education, according to the annual rankings issued by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review in fall 2012. Of the more than 2,000 schools surveyed, DePaul’s graduate entrepreneurship program was ranked 17th and its undergraduate program was ranked 20th.
