Business forum: Learning to lead through emotional intelligence

CHICAGO — Business owners will learn how to lead through emotional intelligence as part of the “Resonant Leadership through Emotional Intelligence” program presented by DePaul University’s Chicago Family Business Council. Designed to provide business owners with the tools to become successful leaders, the interactive program begins at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at the University Club, 76 E. Monroe St., Chicago.

“To be a great leader you need more than IQ, you need EQ. Emotional intelligence means the ability to not only control, but to understand your emotions and the emotions of those around you in order to empower your team to learn more and reach higher,” says Annie McKee, expert in emotional intelligence, bestselling author and keynote speaker.

McKee presents from 2-5 p.m. Prior to her presentation, the program kicks off at 1 p.m. with a participant’s choice of a group lesson with a golf pro or wine and art viewing led by a sommelier. The charge for either activity is $15.

The cost of each prior engagement will be $15. The program and reception will be free for council members and their guests; $30 for DePaul alumni, faculty and students; and $60 for non-member guests. The cost to attend the dinner is $80 for council members, their guests DePaul alumni, faculty and students; and $100 for non-member guests. Anyone interested in attending this event must register online at http://bit.ly/Wb3lec.

About Chicago Family Business Council

The Chicago Family Business Council’s roots date back to 1993, when local businessman James P. Liautaud approached the University of Illinois at Chicago about underwriting an organization dedicated to family businesses. The Family Business Council welcomed its first members in 1994 and operated under UIC’s College of Business Administration for nearly two decades.

In 2011 the organization became an independent nonprofit organization and changed its name to the Chicago Family Business Council. The council formed an affiliation with DePaul University’s Driehaus College of Business in 2012, and the two organizations support each other through programming and other educational resources.

The council’s membership includes 135 people from 85 companies in an array of industries. Family-owned businesses make up 56 percent of its membership, while 28 percent are closely held organizations and 16 percent are other entrepreneurial businesses. Our members lead the organization, serving on the board of directors and overseeing the council’s strategic direction. For more information, visit www.chicagofbc.com.
