Panel Explores Alternatives to Zero-Tolerance School Policies at Oct. 18 DePaul College of Education Forum

A panel of experts will explore restorative justice alternatives to zero-tolerance policies such as suspensions, expulsions and school-based arrests at an Oct. 18 forum hosted by DePaul University’s College of Education. The program is free and open to the public.

The forum will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the DePaul Student Center, Room 220, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave., Chicago.

Titled “Safe and Supportive Schools for All,” the forum features a panel of restorative justice community and school practitioners, who will discuss restorative justice alternatives such as peace circles, peer juries, and parent and community involvement.

Speakers include:

● Robert Spicer, culture and climate specialist, Christian Fenger High School.

● Lynn Morton, coordinator, Austin Peace Center.

● Ana Mercardo, youth organizer, Blocks Together.

● Jean Klavosky, high school teacher, Farragut Career Academy.

● Victor Alquicira, youth leader, Voices of Youth in Chicago Education.

Two continuing professional development unit credits are available for teachers who attend the forum. For more information, contact Diane Horwitz at dhorwit1@depaul.edu.
