Laura Pincus Hartman, a professor of management at DePaul University, was recently named to Fast Company magazine's list of "The League of Extraordinary Women." Hartman, who teaches business ethics, is being recognized for her work in Haiti. With her brother, Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga.org, she helped raise $1.3 million to build a new school in Haiti called, L'Ecole de Choix or School of Choice.

“The work I do is only extraordinary because I am able to work with extraordinary people,” Hartman said. “These students are a constant source of inspiration to me. They display tremendous amounts of courage every day as they step into a new environment full of complete unknowns.” 

The school’s curriculum is designed to develop leadership and prepare kids to become problem solvers. Hartman hopes to end the cycle of violence that Haitian girls and women fall victim to by teaching her students about respect and the values of peace. 

“One of the key values of Ecole de Choix is that every student has the capacity to be a leader – no matter their origins.”

Hartman has spent the majority of her career studying how for-profit businesses can do well financially and still practice philanthropy.  

“My work in Haiti would not have been possible without the support of Father Holtschneider (DePaul's president) and my colleagues throughout all of DePaul’s colleges.”

Hartman was named to the “The League of Extraordinary Women,” along with notables Melinda Gates and Hilary Clinton. “I am so overwhelmed to be included in The League of Extraordinary Women.  I hope it does not inspire others to follow but instead to create their own paths of leadership and join the League themselves,” Hartman said.
