DePaul's College of Commerce Announces Two Appointments in School of Accountancy and Management Information Systems
DePaul University’s College of Commerce appointed Professor Sandra Shelton the new KPMG Alumni Distinguished Professor and Professor Nancy Hill the Ezerski Endowed Chair in the School of Accountancy and Management Information Systems.
A professor of accountancy, Shelton was named Educator of the Year by the Chicago Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors in 2009. She has been instrumental in developing the Center for Internal Audit and creating DePaul’s first university course in internal auditing. DePaul is one of only 17 programs nationwide endorsed by the IIA.
“The partnership that Professor Shelton created with our colleagues in the IIA put the school at the forefront of accounting programs in the Midwest, providing industry with well-educated and much-in-demand internal auditors,” said Kevin Stevens, director of the School of Accountancy and MIS.
Shelton has taught at DePaul’s accountancy school for 18 years, and her research interests focus on judgment and decision-making issues involving financial information. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where she was a KPMG Doctoral Scholar.
In addition to advancing internal auditing education, Shelton works actively to inspire others to follow her career path. She has been involved in The Ph.D. Project since its inception in 1994, including serving as a member of the planning committee for the annual conference. The mission of the Ph.D. Project is to increase the diversity of corporate America by increasing the diversity of business school faculty. At DePaul, she is faculty moderator of the National Association of Black Accountants.
After serving as associate dean for academic quality in the College of Commerce for five years, Hill returns to the school and the accounting classroom as the Ezerski Endowed Chair in recognition of her distinguished contributions to accounting education at DePaul. Prior to serving as associate dean, Hill served six years as founding director of the university’s Office of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
“The Ezerski Endowed Chair, the School of Accountancy’s first endowed chair, further solidifies the school’s leadership in accounting education and assures its continuation well into the future,” Stevens said. “It also demonstrates DePaul’s commitment to faculty excellence – one of the major components of our Many Dreams, One Mission fundraising campaign for DePaul.”
Under Hill’s leadership, the TLA and DePaul made major advancements in providing educational resources and services to faculty, and assessing and improving student learning. Her contributions include overseeing the highly successful supplemental instruction program, which has greatly improved grades and reduced student withdrawals from some of the university’s most difficult courses.
Hill also was instrumental in creating many of the writing, technology, critical thinking and evaluative initiatives – helping engender excellence and institutionalizing best practices at DePaul.
