Leading Theorist on Airports and Commerce to Speak at DePaul University

John D. Kasarda, author of “Aerotropolis: The Way We’ll Live Next,” will discuss his concept of how airports serve as economic engines that shape business location and urban development at a lecture hosted by DePaul University College of Law’s International Aviation Law Institute and the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.

The lecture will be held at noon, Oct. 24, on DePaul’s Loop Campus. Kasarda will discuss his concept of the “aerotropolis” as a new urban form placing airports in the center with cities developing around them, connecting workers, suppliers and executives. He also will address the role of aviation and airports in economic development, urban planning and global competiveness in the 21st century.

Kasarda is a Kenan Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and director of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He also heads up the Institute’s Center for Air Commerce. Kasarda has published more than 100 articles and nine books on airport cities, aviation infrastructure, economic development and competitiveness. He also chairs the annual Airport Cities World Conference and Exhibition and has been an advisor to airports around the globe. Under his leadership, the Kenan Institute was named the world’s top air logistics educational institution by The International Air Cargo Association for its work on airports and economic development.

“We are excited to have Dr. Kasarda at DePaul University,” said Stephen Rudolph, executive director of the International Aviation Law Institute. “As one of the leading figures in airport development and its impact on economic growth, this is an extraordinary opportunity to learn about aerotropolis development, given Chicago’s location as a national aviation and rail hub.”

The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and registration is required by Oct. 20. Click here to register.
