DePaul University Experts Available to Comment on Libya Situation

DePaul University faculty experts are available to provide expert commentary on developments in Libya, including international human rights, American foreign policy, the war on terror, the limits and challenges of military action in Libya, and the legal basis for U.S. military involvement.

Professors available to speak include:

Alberto Coll, professor, College of Law. International human rights, American foreign policy. Believes united forces air strikes in Libya might not be best military strategy. Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense who oversaw the U.S. Defense Department’s policy, strategy and resources in the areas of special operations forces and low-intensity conflict, including counterterrorism, from 1990-1993. Scott Hibbard, assistant professor, political science.  American foreign policy, the war on terror, Islamic politics in Egypt, India, religion and government. Barry Kellman, professor, College of Law. The legal basis for U.S. military involvement, and potential release of chemical-biological weapons. He can be reached at (312) 362-5258 or bkellman@depaul.edu.

Khaled Keshk, associate professor, religious studies. Islam and its sectarian differences, early history, rituals and practices. “Each country in the Middle East is unique and will have very unique outcomes,” Keshk said. “The problem with Libya is that the rebel forces are undefined with no political, military, tribal, ethnic or religious affiliations, and thus have a big problem with leadership, goals and plans.” Keshk is fluent in Arabic and can be reached at (773) 354-4083 or kkeshk@depaul.edu.

Khalil Marrar, assistant professor, political science. U.S. involvement in Libya, Israeli and Arab lobbies, peace and conflict resolution, terrorism, globalization, multiculturalism, democracy. Scott Paeth, associate professor, religious studies. Paeth is an ethicist who specializes in questions of applied ethics, including the ethics of war and peace.
