DePaul University Ranked Among Top 10 Universities Worldwide for Research in Business Ethics

DePaul University was ranked among the top 10 universities in the world for its research in business ethics by the Journal of Business Ethics.

In another ranking, DePaul’s College of Commerce has been awarded Four Palms for being an internationally known top business school, placing 39th in the United States category of a ranking of the 1,000 best business schools in the world by Eduniversal, a Paris-based educational consulting organization.

“The rankings show that DePaul, which already has a stellar reputation in the Chicago area for its strong academic profile, is now gaining an international reputation for its high-quality educational offerings,” DePaul Provost Helmut Epp said.

Contributing to DePaul’s ranking in The Journal of Business Ethics was the fact that DePaul had 22 distinct business ethics research authors during the 10-year period evaluated by the rankings, including Laura Hartman, Vincent de Paul professor of business ethics at DePaul, and Mollie Painter-Morland, associate director of DePaul’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics and associate professor in the Department of Philosophy.

The study, which examined contributing institutions and their business ethics research, found that business ethics research output is closely linked to the missions of the institutions being driven by their values or religious beliefs. Six of the top 10 universities in The Journal’s rankings are Catholic universities.

“It is apparent that business ethics are closely linked to a value system or religious belief,” the study noted. “The efforts devoted to business ethics research could be largely driven by the mission of an institution.”

Hartman said of the ethics ranking: “This recognition is especially humbling given the report’s data in connection with the considerable increase in quality and productivity from outstanding institutions in Europe and Asia. As the largest Catholic university in the country, we work to have an impact, just as we encourage our students to do in their personal and professional lives.”
