DePaul Experts Available to Discuss Aspects of the Sept. 11 Anniversary

 

DePaul University has experts who can comment on issues related to the Sept. 11 anniversary, including the ongoing controversy over the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero.

Aminah B. McCloud, professor of religious studies and director of the Islamic World Studies program. McCloud, author of “African-American Islam” (1995) and “Questions of Faith” (1999), can discuss issues of intolerance directed at Muslims.  “We, here in America, pride ourselves on our engagement of notions of freedom and liberty. Those Americans who wish to continue hate-mongering and emotion-baiting, drawing on fears and the heartfelt emotions of those who lost love ones on 9-11 are not acting in the best of the American tradition.”  McCloud can be reached at (312) 618-8926 or amccloud@depaul.edu

Thomas Mockaitis, professor of history. He can discuss domestic and international terrorism and counter-terrorism, including Al Qaeda, the Middle East and South Asia. Khalil Marrar, assistant professor of political science.  Marrar is an expert on Arab and Muslim-American issues, the Arab-Israeli conflict and peace process, U.S. policy in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and the broader Middle East, ethnic interest groups and terrorism. Charles E. Tucker Jr., executive director of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul.  A retired U.S. Air Force major general who enjoyed a distinguished military career, Tucker can discuss domestic and foreign terrorism as well as terrorism policy.
