DePaul Chosen for Taping of "Broadway in Chicago Backstage: Shrek the Musical"

DePaul University was chosen as the location to tape “Broadway In Chicago Backstage: Shrek the Musical,” a program that begins airing exclusively on Comcast Aug. 3.

The program was taped July 19 before a live audience that included DePaul students, staff and faculty in the DePaul College of Communication’s lower level theater. DePaul students also were invited to ask the cast questions about the show.

“It was a great experience hosting the ‘Broadway In Chicago Backstage: Shrek the Musical’ program here at DePaul,” said Jacqueline Taylor, dean of the College of Communication at DePaul. “Our students saw first-hand what it entails to put together a program like this. We look forward to developing our partnership with Broadway In Chicago through internships and other educational opportunities for DePaul students.”

Hosted by Paul Lisnek, anchor of “Newsmakers” and theatre correspondent for “Prime Time Chicago,” the 30-minute program includes interviews with Jeanine Tesori (composer) and cast members Eric Petersen (Shrek), Haven Burton (Princess Fiona) and Alan Mingo Jr. (Donkey). The unique collaboration is part of an effort by Broadway In Chicago to showcase local educational institutions with substantial arts programs.

Comcast will produce three exclusive Broadway in Chicago Backstage presentations per year, with each program featuring a different Broadway in Chicago show as well as a Chicago university or college. The program is promoted and aired multiple times on Comcast’s award-winning regional programming CN100 (Channel 100), exclusively on Comcast. It also will be featured in the “Video on Demand” section for Comcast subscribers.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring Broadway’s best shows and working theatrical artists to speak directly to the students of Chicago’s top-notch educational institutions,” said Lou Raizin, president of Broadway In Chicago. “The amazing in-depth program that Comcast produces is extremely interesting and delivers the same high quality as the shows that are produced on our stages. We are grateful to Comcast for their support of theatre.”

Similar in format to the popular “Inside the Actors Studio,” the new program features in-depth conversations with cast and creative team members from major Broadway in Chicago productions. The Shrek program will first air on Comcast Aug. 3 at 8:30 p.m., and will continue airing throughout the summer on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. It will also be available on Comcast On Demand.
