MEDIA ADVISORY: DePaul Symposium Promotes Democracy and Active Civic Participation in Education June 8

WHO:          Keynote speaker Joel Westheimer, professor of education at the University of Ottawa. He is author of the book, “Among School Teachers: Community, Autonomy and Ideology in Teachers’ Work” and editor of “Pledging Allegiance: The Politics of Patriotism in American Schools.” Westheimer teaches and writes on democracy, social justice, youth activism, service learning and community.

 

WHAT:         Symposium on Democratic and Civic Education will explore how collaborative partnerships between schools of education, urban schools and other community organizations promote democracy, active civic participation and excellent education.

 

WHEN:           Tuesday, June 8

                       4:30 p.m.: Breakout sessions featuring Carolyn Pereira, executive director of the Constitutional Rights Foundation; Brennan Smith-Evans, associate director of the Mikva Challenge; Shawn Healy, managing director of the McCormick Freedom Project; Bonnie Oberman, director of Facing History and Ourselves; Mark Rodriguez, executive director, Changing Worlds; Carolyn Cyriaque, director, Teaching Scholars program, Golden Apple Foundation; and Jon Schmidt, office of service learning for the Chicago Public Schools.

 

                       6 p.m.:     Welcome by Paul Zionts, dean of the School of Education; partners’ recognition, awards and keynote address
