DePaul University will continue its participation in the ongoing region-wide celebration of the famed 1909 Burnham Plan of Chicago by hosting a number of events as part of the “Century in Motion Festival,” which kicks off June 19 with an outing to a symphonic concert in Millennium Park.

The public is invited to join the DePaul community for a reception marking the beginning of the festival at 5 p.m. June 19 at the DePaul Center, lower concourse, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, followed by a stroll to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park to enjoy the feature presentation of “Plans.” The Grant Park Music Festival commissioned composer Michael Torke to create a large-scale world-premiere piece for orchestra based on Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, which will be performed at 6:30 p.m. For more information or to RSVP, e-mail Lauren Fischer at burnham@depaul.edu.

The concert and other activities commemorate the centennial of Chicago’s famed Burnham Plan by architect and urban planners Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett. The first great master of regional plans, it led to the creation of the lakefront parks, forest preserve districts and dramatic improvements to the city’s downtown area.

DePaul’s Burnham centennial events are being held in collaboration with the Burnham Plan Centennial Committee housed at Chicago Metropolis 2020 and its 200-plus partner organizations, the Harry F. Chaddick Foundation, other universities and civic leaders.

DePaul programs and initiatives include:

● “Chicago in Motion” Tours, June 20, 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. DePaul professors will guide a two-hour chartered bus tour that includes visits to the Chicago lakefront and a brief look at two Chicago neighborhoods, including Chinatown. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 16. Bus departs from DePaul’s Chaddick Institute of Metropolitan Development, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. A free one-hour walking tour of Millennium Park will follow, departing at 3 p.m. from 243 S. ● Virtual Burnham Initiative Roll-out, June 23, 5:30 to 8 p.m., 243 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. Lake Forest College Professor Davis Schneideman will unveil his computer program that re-creates portions of the Burnham Plan, allowing users to make their own additions. Participants will experience a fast-paced virtual tour of Burnham and Bennett’s Chicago as well as far-away cities they helped plan. A visit to the DePaul computer facility in the Lewis Center, 25 E. Jackson Blvd., to explore three-dimensional images will be followed by a brief discussion and reception with Schneideman at the Chaddick Institute, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. ● Morning Tea with the Descendents of Daniel Burnham Jr., June 27, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Chaddick Institute, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. Join a group discussion with descendents of Daniel Burnham Jr., son of Daniel H. Burnham, who spent his life working to implement ideas in the Plan of Chicago. ● 1933 Century of Progress Discussion and Walking Tour with Visiting Scholar and Author Lisa Schrenk, June 29, 5:30 p.m., Chaddick Institute,  243 S. Wabash Ave., Suite 9000, Chicago. Noted scholar Lisa Schrenk will share details about the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition held on the near South Side in the vicinity of today’s Museum Campus. Participants will see images of the fairground design created in part by Edward Bennett and exposition buildings designed by the sons of Daniel H. Burnham. An optional walking tour of the former fairgrounds (after a short bus ride to the Field Museum) will follow at 6:45 p.m. and conclude at the museum at 7:45 p.m. The presentation and book signing is free; the walking tour is limited to 30 participants, costs $5 and requires advanced registration. ● Festival Reception and Visit to “Chicago Model City” Exhibit, July 9, 5 p.m., DePaul Center, lower concourse, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago. Come to Burnham’s neighborhood for a reception followed by a special viewing of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s newest exhibit, “Chicago Model City.” Through scale models, photographs, maps, videos and digital visualizations, “Chicago Model City” investigates planning ideas and the challenges of their implementation. ● “Building the Business of Architecture: the Burnham Brothers and Chicago in the Golden Twenties,” July 9 through Sept. 16; opening reception, July 9, 5 to 7 p.m., DePaul University Art Museum, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave., Chicago. The exhibition features 15 architectural drawings by D.H. Burnham and Co., ranging from façade drawings to engineering plans. The exhibition also will include paintings, prints, historic and recent photos of downtown Chicago and a copy of the Burnham Plan and other archival material. ● Daniel Burnham and Chicago’s Great Railway Terminals Mini-bus Tour, July 11, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., departs from DePaul’s Computing and Digital Media building, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. Explore the legacy of the six railroad stations that were once vibrant parts of downtown Chicago. Discover some of the remarkable features of each terminal, discuss the efforts made to consolidate them before and after the Plan of Chicago, and the future possibilities for high-speed rail. Historians will greet the group at several historic station sites, including Burnham’s Union Station. Participants must be at least 16 years old; cost is $35. ● Daniel Burnham and Jane Addams Meet St. Vincent de Paul Roundtable Discussion, July 15, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Cliff Dwellers Club, 200 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. A roundtable discussion with DePaul professors Marco Tavanti and Alex Papadopoulos and author Jan Metzger explores the ethical principles that underscored the work of Burnham, Addams and St. Vincent. ● Daniel Burnham and Chicago City Planning Exhibit, Sept. 18 through Dec. 18, John T. Richardson Library, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave., Chicago. An exhibit in the Department of Special Collections and Archives features DePaul’s copy of the original 1909 Plan of Chicago. It includes responses to the Burnham Plan, plans for other civic improvements and background on the city that needed the plans to shape its growth and future.
