Anti-Racist Author Tim Wise To Speak At DePaul April 21

Prominent anti-racist author and activist Tim Wise will speak at DePaul University on April 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cortelyou Commons, 2324 N. Fremont St., Chicago.


On tour to promote his book “Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama,” Wise also will sign copies of his latest tome.


Called "one of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation” by critical race theorist and Georgetown professor Michael Eric Dyson, Wise has been invited to speak at more than 400 colleges and universities around the country. He has provided anti-racism training to teachers, journalists, physicians, corporate, governmental and military officials.


Currently, Wise serves as the Oliver L. Brown Distinguished Visiting Scholar for Diversity Issues at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.


 
He is the author of three previous books: “White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son (2005),” “Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White (2007)” and “Speaking Treason Fluently: Anti-Racist Reflections From an Angry White Male (2008).”

Wise holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tulane University, where he received global attention for his anti-apartheid work and gratitude from Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

           
Wise’s appearance at DePaul is sponsored by the university’s Cultural Center in recognition of National Diversity Month. The event is free and open to the public; limited seating is available.
