Former Outfielder Doug Glanville To Discuss 2003 Cubs Team And Sports Economics At DePaul

Retired professional baseball player Doug Glanville, an Ivy League alumnus who played under the ivy at Wrigley Field, will discuss the Chicago Cubs and baseball economics in an address to DePaul University sports management program students and faculty at 11:45 a.m. April 8 in the 11th floor DePaul Club, DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago.

Glanville, who was a utility outfielder for ill-fated 2003 Chicago Cubs team that came within five outs of competing in the World Series, will address management and free agent player issues that contributed to the team’s disappointing finish that year, among other issues.

During his major league career from 1996 to 2005, Glanville played for the Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers. He played varsity baseball at the University of Pennsylvania for three years and was a first-round draft pick by the Cubs in 1991, but he decided to finish his degree in systems engineering before entering pro ball. Glanville made his major league baseball debut on June 9, 1996, as an outfielder for the Cubs. He played for the team from 1996 to 1997 and again in 2003.

In 1999 Glanville was second in the National League with total hits, smacking 204, and was eighth in the National League with a .325 batting average that year. At his retirement, he had accumulated 1,100 hits and a 293-game errorless streak. A student of labor history, Glanville also served on the executive subcommittee of the Major League Baseball Players Association and as a player representative.

Glanville writes a guest op-ed column called "Heading Home" for The New York Times about the culture of sports, addressing such issues as performance pressures that led some players to abuse steroids and how a healthy amount of fear can spur performance. The son of academics, Glanville has put his degree to good use by founding GK Alliance LLC, a green-friendly real estate development company specializing in residential building in Chicago’s western suburbs.
