DePaul University Joins In 2008 Looptopia Celebration
This weekend, DePaul University will again be a part of Looptopia, which is expected to draw thousands to Chicago’s Loop for an all-night cultural festival. The event, organized by the Chicago Loop Alliance, will bring the city together for a 14-hour celebration of visual art, music, poetry, dance and spectacle on May 2.
From 5 to 11 p.m., various student works from DePaul’s Digital Cinema program will be shown on a large inflatable screen outdoors in the DePaul Center Plaza, 1 E. Jackson Blvd. DePaul Center will also host numerous other poetry, music and interactive art events throughout the night, and a Looptopia information booth and wristband distribution stand will be located in the building’s lobby.
The 4-year-old Digital Cinema program fuses the art of moviemaking with digital technology and is now the largest undergraduate major at DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM). With 3,079 students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs, CDM is one of the largest colleges of its kind in the nation. The university has invested more than $1.3 million during the past two years alone in state-of-the-art labs, facilities and specialized equipment for the college.
In addition, three student musical groups from the nationally acclaimed DePaul School of Music will be performing at Looptopia events. The DePaul A Cappella Choir, an award-winning, 16-voice choral ensemble, will perform at 7:15 p.m. at the Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, 55 E. Wacker Drive. The DePaul Wind Ensemble will perform compositions by Mozart at 7:30 p.m. at the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St. Additionally, the DePaul Jazz Combo will perform jazz favorites at 8:45 p.m. at the Randolph Café of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.
Finally, students from the renowned programs at The Theatre School at DePaul University will perform solo pieces written and directed by Carlos Murillo at the Chicago Cultural Center’s Garland Room at 7:30 p.m.
With 23,401 students on two city and four suburban campuses, including one nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Loop, DePaul is the largest Catholic university in the nation, and the largest private, not-for-profit university in the Midwest.
