DePaul University Service-Aimed Lecture Series Opens March 6 With a Presentation by Julie Chavez
DePaul University will open a three-month lecture series on service and values when Julie Chavez speaks March 6 at 5:45 p.m. at the DePaul Art Museum, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave. Granddaughter of the late civil rights and farm labor leader Cesar Chavez, Julie is the program director of the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation. Her talk will focus on the importance of keeping her grandfather’s legacy alive through service.
The kick-off for the lecture—which is supported by DePaul’s Steans Center for Community Based Service Learning, University Ministry, Office of Mission and Values and the Center for Latino Research, as well as other university groups—begins with a 4 p.m. Mass in DePaul’s St. Louise de Marillac Chapel, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. The Mass is intended to draw parallels in the faith lives of St. Vincent de Paul and Chavez in challenging systems of injustice. A reception will take place in the art museum at 5 p.m.
St. Vincent de Paul, the university’s namesake, was a 17th century French priest who was known as the “Apostle of Charity” for his service to the poor.
DePaul’s Steans Center provides educational opportunities grounded in Vincentian community values to DePaul students.
The lecture series is free and open to the public. For more information about the lectures, which run through June 2008, visit http://cbsl.depaul.edu.
