Recent media stories about DePaul University include:

  • John Ahern, professor of accountancy, was quoted in an Aug. 28 Chicago Sun-Times story about the College of Commerce’s new Center for Global Accountancy Education, Benchmarking and Research, established to improve financial accounting practices in developing countries.

  • Eva Patrikakou, professor of education, gave advice to parents about communicating with their children’s teachers in a Chicago Tribune “How To” column Aug. 27.

  • A front page story in the Aug. 24 RedEye quoted J.D. Bindenagel, DePaul vice president of Community, Government and International Affairs, about conflict diamonds, which are the subject of two current documentaries and an upcoming movie. From 2002 to 2003 Bindenagel led a U.S. government negotiation team that banned trade in conflict diamonds used to finance rebellions against legitimate governments in Africa.

  • Joe Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, discussed how Midwest drought has affected the railroad industry in a CNBC story Aug. 23. He also was interviewed by WLS-TV Aug. 10 about heightened security at airports after a foiled plot to bomb flights to the United States.

  • DePaul attracted media coverage for being honored in two rankings guidebooks released this month. DePaul was chosen No. 1 in the nation for its diverse student body in the 2007 edition of Princeton Review’s The Best 361 Colleges, which was based on a survey of 115,000 students on 361 college campuses. U.S.News & World Report’s 2007 America’s Best Colleges recognized DePaul’s service learning program among the 25 best in the nation in its programs to look for category. The Princeton Review ranking was mentioned on WBBM-TV and WLS-TV Aug. 23 and by the Chicago Tribune Aug 22.

  • Law Professor Rodney Blackman was interviewed by the Tribune and WMAQ-TV Aug. 22 about free speech issues involving a McHenry County ban on the use of mascots in street advertising.

  • Law Professor Leonard Cavise was interviewed by WFLD-TV Aug. 18 about the confession of John Karr to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. He also was interviewed about police torture on WBBM-AM Aug. 11 in a story about a protest against former Chicago Police commander John Burge.

  • Law Professor Andrea Lyon was quoted in a Detroit Free Press story Aug. 17 about U.S. District Judge Paul Gadola’s reluctant decision to revoke the bond of convicted murder Kylleen Hargrave-Thomas, sending her back to prison. Lyon currently represents Hargrave-Thomas.

  • DePaul was one of the schools surveyed in an Aug. 18 CNN Headline News report about the increase in tuition and fees for both public and private schools.

  • Lisa Kerouac, associate director of admissions, was quoted on WLS-TV Aug. 16 about the improvement of entrance exam scores for Illinois students.

  • Barbara Radner, director of DePaul’s Center for Urban Education, was quoted in an Aug. 16 Tribune article about the rise of ACT scores for Illinois high school graduates. According to the article, students in every racial and ethnic group saw an improvement in their scores.

  • Geovannie Concepcion, a DePaul commerce student, was mentioned in an Aug. 15 Wall Street Journal article about companies targeting high school students for internships, scholarships and employment opportunities. Concepcion, a sophomore accounting major, has interned with PricewaterhouseCoopers since high school.

  • William Calzaretta, executive director of suburban campuses, was quoted in an Aug. 15 Daily Herald story about a survey unveiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, which found that less than half of suburban adults hold a four-year college degree.

  • Arlene Yetnikoff, director of information security, was interviewed by Crain’s Chicago Business on the effectiveness of laptop computer locks Aug. 14.

  • Political Science Professor Larry Bennett was quoted in an Aug. 12 San Francisco Chronicle story about how the city of San Francisco may institute some of the same changes made by Mayor Richard M. Daley in Chicago.

  • Wicklander Business Ethics Chair Pat Werhane was quoted in an Aug. 13 Atlanta Journal-Constitution story about Wal-Mart products made from sweatshop labor.

  • Management Professor Laura Hartman was quoted in an Aug. 13 Atlanta Journal-Constitution story about the recent demand for professional and academic ethicists.

  • An op-ed written by Law Professor Michelle Goodwin about the debate over degrading rap videos appeared in the Christian Science Monitor Aug. 11.

  • A DePaul certificate program, Wigs and Hair Chicago, offered by the Department of Continuing and Professional Education, was mentioned in an Aug. 10 TimeOut Chicago magazine story and an Aug. 8 Chronicle of Higher Education story. Another certificate program, MBA Primer, was mentioned in the Aug. 1 Today’s Chicago Woman.

  • CTI Professor Ashley Morris was featured in an Aug. 9 Chicago Sun-Times technology column about geographic information systems assisting with hurricane preparedness and a database developed by DePaul students to help New Orleans emergency procedures. He also was quoted in an Aug. 9 Los Angeles Times story about his urge to participate in the New Orleans recovery efforts.

  • Akihiko Takashashi, assistant professor of education, was quoted in an Aug. 9 Kyodo News article about the growing interest in Japanese-made English language math textbooks.

  • Assistant Management Professor Robert Rubin was quoted in an Aug. 9 Daily Herald story about the problem with young employees in the corporate world having embarrassing items on their MySpace accounts.

  • Psychology Professor Leonard Jason talked about the effects of kidnapping on people of all nations in an Aug. 7 Tribune article about the abduction of soldier Ehud Goldwasser by Hezbollah. He also was quoted in an Aug 4 online Forbes story about chronic fatigue syndrome.

  • Law Professor Jeff Shaman was interviewed in an Aug. 6 New York Daily News article about favoritism in judicial appointments.

  • DePaul’s Theatre School was mentioned on “Live! With Regis And Kelly” Aug. 2 by Actor John C. Reilly, a former theatre school student.

  • Felix Masud-Piloto, director of the Center for Latino Research, was quoted on National Public Radio’s “Marketplace” Aug. 2 about the number of people living in Cuba who would like to come to Miami. He also commented on the Cuban government Aug. 1 on CLTV and WGN-TV.

  • Psychology Professor Midge Wilson talked about cultural difference in body-size preference in response to a question in the Aug. 2006 issue of Esquire Magazine.

  • On Aug. 1, the Sun-Times Education Guide ran a cover story on freshman orientation and getting first-year students acclimated to the city. The university’s Premiere DePaul and Discover Chicago programs were both featured prominently, with the latter singled out as a model for other universities in the area. The reporter also interviewed Premiere DePaul coordinator Jennifer Weed. The article featured a photo of DePaul students taking part in a trust-building activity during one of their orientation sessions.

  • Marketing Professor Tommy Whittler was quoted in an Aug. 1 New York Times story about stereotypical portrayals of overweight black women in television commercial ads.
