DePaul In The News

Media stories about DePaul University from May 1 to May 31 included:

  • A long-term project by DePaul's public service graduate program to help hurricane-ravaged New Orleans plan the rebuilding of its Mid-City neighborhood was the subject of a May 30 Chicago Tribune feature story, “Lessons in Disaster Recovery: DePaul Students in News Orleans Get Hands-On Education in Public Service.” Gloria Simo, assistant director of DePaul’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, and students were quoted. Tribune.

  • Master of Public Service Professor Joe Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul, penned opinion pieces published in the Tribune May 30 and the Chicago Sun-Times May 25, and he was interviewed by the Daily Herald May 11, about United Airline’s potential move to a new headquarters. He also was interviewed about O’Hare airport expansion issues for a May 17 Tribune story. Tribune.

  • The Sun-Times ran a feature story – with a page 1 mention – May 29, and WLS-TV broadcast stories May 19 and May 21, about student Terrance Barker overcoming the odds to earn his law degree from DePaul’s College of Law. Barker was paralyzed in a tragic accident when he was just 29 hours short of earning his law degree. With courage and determination, he was able to fight his way back and earn his degree at the college’s May 21 commencement, which WLS-TV covered. Sun-Times.

  • WBBM-TV on May 28 mentioned the fifth anniversary celebration for the Center for Justice in Capital Cases at DePaul’s College of Law. The May 31 event features a keynote address by Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book, "Dead Man Walking."

  • Ray Whittington’s appointment as dean of DePaul’s College of Commerce and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business was reported by Crain’s Chicago Business May 22 and its Chicagobusiness.com May 4; the Tribune May 7; the Financial Times May 2; and WBEZ-FM May 1. Chicagobusiness.com.

  • Crain’s May 22 issue ran two stories about risk management that quoted Finance Chair Ali Fatemi. One story mentioned DePaul’s plans to open a risk management center named for the late Fred Arditti, a finance industry pioneer and faculty member. Crain’s Chicago Business.

  • “I think it’s the best (job) market in the last four years,” Gillian Steele, director of DePaul’s Career Center, said in a May 19 Sun-Times story about the career outlook for college graduates. She told the newspaper that the number of employers participating in DePaul job fairs rose 62 percent compared to last year. Sun-Times.

  • A Conrad N. Hilton Foundation’s grant to DePaul’s School for New Learning was mentioned in the Tribune’s “Grants and Giving” column May 19. The $480,000 grant over six years will fund a bachelor’s degree program in Kenya for sisters of Catholic congregations in Africa. The same column also noted the 30th anniversary of the DePaul Symphony Orchestra’s Joseph and Marie Grant Spring Concert at Orchestra Hall, which is funded by a bequest by alumnus Joseph Grant.   • The Tribune ran a story May 19 about a Jazz Showcase concert and recording session featuring saxophonist Phil Woods with the DePaul Jazz Ensemble, led by Bob Lark. Tribune.

  • Hank Rodkin, marketing executive-in-residence, was an in-studio guest on the “ABC 7 Morning News” on WLS-TV May 18. Rodkin discussed the impact of U.S.-China trade relations during the segment.

  • Speculation about whether DePaul may be interested in the Lincoln Park site that will be vacated by Children’s Memorial Hospital in five years was the subject of a Tribune story May 18. Tribune.

  • Raman Chadha, executive director of the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, discussed entrepreneur business exit strategies and angel investing networks, including the center’s network, in a Tribune story May 16. Tribune.

  • Political Science Professor Larry Bennett was interviewed by the Washington Post for a May 15 story about Mayor Richard Daley’s future as the mayor’s alleged patronage chief goes to trial in federal court. Washington Post.

  • Religion News Service ran a story May 15 about Muslims and civil rights. Religious Studies Professor Aminah McCloud, director of DePaul’s Islamic World Studies program, was quoted extensively.

  • Management Professor Laura Hartman was among the “top Chicago minds” interviewed and photographed by Crain’s Chicago Business for a May 15 story about ethics and the Enron trial. Chicagobusiness.com.

  • Patricia Monaghan, School for New Learning professor, discussed narrative problems in the novel “The Da Vinci Code” in a May 15 Sun-Times story about the book and movie. Sun-Times.

  • Shayla Theil, assistant communications professor and author of a forthcoming book on adolescent girls and instant messaging, penned a May 14 Tribune opinion piece about safety concerns involving girls who post information on MySpace.com. Tribune.

  • The Daily Herald quoted Law Professor Leonard Cavise May 14 about the use of the insanity defense in a local murder case. Daily Herald.

  • Small business tips from Management Professor Lisa Gundry, director of the Ryan Center for Creativity and Innovation, were quoted by BusinessWeek Online May 9. BusinessWeek.

  • The Theatre School’s 18th Annual Award for Excellence was covered by WGN-TV May 8, WGN-AM May 7 and WBBM-TV May 5. Honored actor Brian Dennehy told WGN-AM radio interviewer Dean Richards that he considers Chicago the nation’s best regional theater town and DePaul at the center of this theater scene.

  • Psychology Professor Leonard Jason was featured May 5 on “Recovery Coast to Coast,” a nationally broadcast streaming audio program aired live by KLFE-AM in Seattle. The 15-minute interview was about his research of Oxford House’s addiction recovery program.

  • History Professor Tom Mockaitis provided his view of the Zacarias Moussaoui trial and sentence during interviews with WBBM-TV and WLS-TV May 4.

  • The high-tech amenities of Loft Right, a new residence hall that will begin housing DePaul students in the fall, were the subject of a Sun-Times story May 3. Sun-Times.

  • Brian Spittle, assistant vice president of enrollment management, authored the featured Tribune letter to the editor May 2. The letter commented on a recent Consortium on Chicago Schools research report about Chicago Public School (CPS) students entering college and DePaul’s experience with CPS graduates. He also commented on the report in a piece written for the May issue of Catalyst Chicago. Catalyst Chicago.

  • Law professors Sioban Albiol and Craig Mousin discussed immigrant rights issues in Sun-Times and WLS-TV stories, respectively, May 1.

  • Tom Muscarello’s work with the Chicago Police Department on an innovative crime pattern detection artificial intelligence system was the subject of a feature story in Government Technology magazine’s May issue: Government Technology.

  • The May issue of Chicago Lawyer featured a story about law student study abroad programs that mentioned the College of Law’s cooperative program with the University College Dublin.

  • CTI Professor Susy Chan was interviewed on “Viewpoints,” a syndicated public-affairs radio show that airs on more than 300 stations nationwide, about the future of e-commerce and online retailing. The show aired during the first week of May.

  • David Kalsbeek, vice president for enrollment management, was among five university officials from across the nation interviewed for a story about current approaches to enrollment management in the May issue of University Business.
