DePaul In The News

On average, DePaul University is mentioned in three news stories every day. Highlights of DePaul news coverage in February include:

  • Kiljoong Kim, research director at DePaul’s Egan Urban Center, evaluated Chicago demographic data in a February Chicago magazine story that compared big cities in terms of education, economy, culture, crime and weather.

  • Law Professor Patty Gerstenblith was interviewed on PBS-TV's "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" Feb. 28 about new legal guidelines for loans of antiquities to museums. She also was quoted by the New York Sun Feb. 3 and Boston Globe Feb 23. about the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s decision to return 20 pieces from its collection to Italy.

  • DePaul's LGBTQ studies minor was covered by Newsweek Feb. 27, the Chicago Tribune Feb. 20, the Washington Post Feb. 5 and National Public Radio Jan. 26.

  • History Professor Thomas Mockaitis assessed the risk of foreign companies managing U.S. ports in a WGN-TV interview Feb. 23. He also wrote a Tribune op-ed Feb. 7 suggesting that the U.S. government pledge better support for U.S. soldiers and veterans.

  • Continuing a series of articles about her experiences as a student in DePaul Professor Todd Parker’s English 439 course, Tribune cultural writer Julia Keller wrote columns on Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22 about the class interpreting the works of author Jonathan Swift.

  • Law Professor Leonard Cavise was interviewed about legal issues involving the corruption trial of former Ill. Gov. George Ryan by WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" Feb. 22, the Daily Herald Feb. 19, Tribune Feb. 16 and WLS-TV Feb. 2.

  • Law Professor Michelle Goodwin, director of DePaul's Health Law Institute, was interviewed by WLS-TV about preventative medicine programs Feb. 22 and she discussed black market organ and tissue transplant suppliers on WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" Feb. 2.

  • An op-ed by Accountancy Professor David J. Roberts, which questioned the Bush administration's tax cuts and spending priorities, was published by the Providence Journal Feb. 21.

  • The London Sunday Times gave a positive review Feb. 19 to Theatre School Professor Rachel Shteir's book about the history of burlesque.

  • DePaul Law Professor Wayne Lewis was quoted about legal issues involving product warranties in a Feb. 15 Chicago Sun-Times story.

  • In a Feb. 13 Tribune story, the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., DePaul’s president, discussed the university’s dedication to social justice and its request for a third-party investigation into allegations that Coca-Cola’s Colombian bottlers arranged attacks on unionists. DePaul, which serves Coke on its campus, is among six universities that have urged that the soft drink company to accede to an impartial investigation of the allegations.

  • Law Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni discussed former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s trial in stories in the Austin American-Statesman Feb. 12 and the Christian Science Monitor Feb. 2.

  • Four DePaul alumni who have been poker buddies for four decades were featured in a Feb. 12 Newsweek story about the importance of friendships for Baby Boomers.

  • Despite a downturn in law school applications nationally, DePaul’s College of Law reported an eight percent increase in full-time student applicants and a three percent increase in applicants overall, according to a Feb. 10 Daily Law Bulletin story quoting Michael S. Burns, assistant dean for admissions.

  • Joseph Schwieterman, executive director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, discussed the debate about Chicago airport congestion and expansion in a USA Today story Feb. 9.

  • Robert Rubin, assistant professor of management, was quoted in a Feb. 7 Tribune story about the appropriateness of iPod use at work.

  • Psychology professor Ralph Erber discussed why some students believe lucky charms will help them with ACT and LSAT tests in a story about superstition published by the Daily Herald Feb. 7.

  • Commerce Interim Dean Ray Whittington and accounting student Jon Assell were featured in a Sun-Times story about increasing accountancy enrollments at DePaul and bright job prospects for students majoring in accounting. Assell was photographed for the story, which was published Feb. 6.

  • A community high school student artwork show hosted by DePaul's Naperville Campus was covered by the The Naperville Sun Feb. 6.

  • The Tribune sports section on Feb. 6 profiled former Blue Demon guard Drake Deiner, who recently joined DePaul’s Athletics staff after experiencing severe illness caused by Crohns Disease.

  • DePaul sociology professor Greg Scott discussed recent Chicago reports of heroin overdoses in a Feb. 6 Tribune story.

  • Marketing Professor Bruce Newman discussed why Super Bowl advertising analysis is important to marketers in a Daily Herald story Feb. 5.
