DePaul To Host Panel Discussion On Prison And Families
A panel of women directly impacted by incarceration will discuss “War on the Family: Mothers in Prison and the Families They Leave Behind,” at DePaul University Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave., Room 314.
Panelists are: Joanne Archibald, associate director of the Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers (CLAIM); Margaret Martinez, a resident of Grace House, a transitional center for women exiting the prison system, and an advocate for Visible Voices, the advocacy arm of CLAIM; and Wenona Thompson, program director for Girl Talk, a program for girls ages 12 – 17 who are housed in the Cook Country Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. The panel discussion will focus on author Renny Golden’s book by the same title, “War on the Family: Mothers in Prison and the Families They Leave Behind.” Sharing the stories of women and children in Chicago and New Mexico, Golden critiques what she views as a national policy assault on poor families that has been waged over the last two decades. Two of the women serving on the panel, Archibald and Thompson, are featured in the book.
The “War and the Family” panel discussion is co-sponsored by DePaul’s Women’s Center and is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the center’s director, Elsa Saeta, at 773/325-7559.
