New York Performance Artist Carmelita Tropicana Brings Her One-Woman Show To DePaul University

Legendary New York performance artist Carmelita Tropicana will perform her latest solo show, “With What Ass Does the Cockroach Sit?” at DePaul University at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave.

Cuban-born Tropicana is a critically acclaimed actress, writer and performance artist whose off-Broadway work has garnered her several awards. She received an Obie award in 1999 for “Sustained Excellence in Performance,” was named “One of the Most Notable Women of 1998” by Spanish-language daily, El Diaro, won best short at the Berlin Film Festival in 1994 with director Ela Troyano for their collaboration on “Carmelita Tropicana: Your Kunst is Your Waffen,” and most recently earned a 2002 nomination for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Award in Outstanding Theater for her collaboration with Marga Gomez in “Single Wet Female.”

“With What Ass Does the Cockroach Sit?” is billed as an Aesopian tale set in Havana and the “United States of Miami.” A cast of parrots, lizards, dolphins, bulldogs, cats and cockroaches turn their incisive attention to human tragedy when Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez survives a shipwreck only to be cast adrift in an international custody battle and media frenzy.

The performance is free and open to the public. For more information call 773/325-4804 or email crodrig6@depaul.edu .
