Award-Winning Actor, Renowned Author, Televison Anchor Will Speak at DePaul University's 2004 Commencement June 12 and 13

An international non-violence advocate, a Golden Globe Award-winning actor and director, a respected local television anchor, an industry leaders and an acclaimed author are among the honorary degree recipients at a series of commencement ceremonies for DePaul University this weekend. Seven DePaul colleges and schools will award diplomas to approximately 4,800 students at graduation ceremonies that will be held on June 12 and 13.

Here is the lineup of ceremonies and speakers:

June 12, 8:30 a.m., DePaul School of Education Commencement: Robert Jordan, news anchor for WGN-TV, will receive an honorary degree for the School of Education graduation ceremony at the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive. Jordan also produces, writes and reports news stories and documentaries for the superstation, where he has been on the news staff for 29 years. Jordan holds a doctorate in philosophy of education from Loyola University.

June 12, 9 a.m., Barat College of DePaul Commencement: Arun Gandhi, founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., will deliver the commencement address. He is the grandson of the late Mahatma Gandhi and a renowned advocate for nonviolent social change, bringing his grandfather's message to the world. The commencement ceremony for Barat College of DePaul will take place on the Barat Front Lawn, 700 E. Westleigh Road, Lake Forest, Ill.

June 12, 11:30 a.m., Combined DePaul School of Music and Theatre School Commencements: An award-winning actor, playwright and director, Regina Taylor will receive an honorary degree at the commencement of the School of Music and The Theatre School. Taylor, who won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the 1991 TV series "I’ll Fly Away," also has had major film roles in "The Negotiator," "Courage Under Fire," "A Family Thing," "Losing Isaiah" and "Clockers." An accomplished playwright and director, her most recent work is "Crowns," currently on a national tour, and she is an artistic associate with the Goodman Theatre Company. The ceremony will be held at the Civic Opera House.

June 12, 2:30 p.m., DePaul School for New Learning Commencement: The ceremony for DePaul’s School for New Learning will be held at the Civic Opera House. On Friday, June 11, Anthony Lewis, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and retired columnist for The New York Times, will receive an honorary degree in a special ceremony and roundtable discussion at 2 p.m. at the DePaul Club, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., 11th Floor. Lewis, whose career as a journalist spanned more than half a century, is also the author of three books, most notably 1964’s "Gideon’s Trumpet," about a landmark Supreme Court case that established the right to court-appointed counsel for criminal defendants.

June 13, 8:30 a.m., DePaul School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI) Commencement: The commencement ceremony for DePaul CTI will be held at the Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Ill.

June 13, Noon, DePaul College of Commerce Commencement: Rex Sinquefield, co-chairman, Dimensional Fund Advisors, Inc., will receive an honorary degree from the college. Sinquefield, a DePaul life trustee, is widely credited with inventing and pioneering index investing and index funds during the early 1970s. He was one of the first money managers to successfully apply the principles of academic finance to fund management. The ceremony will be held at the Allstate Arena.

June 13, 3:30 p.m., DePaul College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Commencement: Acclaimed mystery novelist Sara Paretsky will receive an honorary degree and deliver the keynote address for the commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Paretsky, best known for her series of books on fictional Chicago detective V.I. Warshawski – one of which was turned into a major motion picture in the 1980s – has written 12 published novels and a collection of short stories. Her essays have appeared in the New York Times, Booklist and the Women’s Review of Books. She received the 1996 Mark Twain Award for distinguished contributions to Midwest literature, and she was named Ms. Magazine’s Woman of the Year in 1987. The ceremony will be held at the Allstate Arena.

DePaul is the largest Catholic university in the United States and the seventh-largest private university in the nation. A richly diverse population of 23,610 students attends classes on two city and five suburban campuses.
