DePaul’s University’s School Of Music Will Present New Music DePaul Concerts May 23 And 30
New Music DePaul, the contemporary professional music series at DePaul University’s School of Music, will present solo and chamber works by ten Midwest composers at concerts May 23 and May 30. The free concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave.
The May 23 concert program comprises works by Stacy Garrop, Fred Gifford, Kathleen Ginther, Greg Hutter and Howard Sandroff. The May 30 concert will feature three world premieres: “Improvisations on ‘Lines Where Beauty Lingers’” for solo clarinet by M. William Karlins; “Rothko Landscapes” for four clarinets by Jody Rockmaker; and “Profaning the Sacred” for flute/voice and clarinet by Janice Misurell-Mitchell. Music by Jeffrey Kowalkowski and Kurt Westerberg also will be performed. Kowalkowski, Misurell-Mitchell and Westerberg are School of Music faculty members.
Performers for the May 30 concert include Richard Nunemaker, clarinetist and saxophonist with the Houston Symphony; John Bruce Yeh, clarinetist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and Teresa Reilly, clarinetist and founding member of the Musicalia Chamber Ensemble.
Both concerts are part of DePaul’s three-month festival, United Sounds of America, celebrating American music. The New Music DePaul series is hosted by noted composer George Flynn. Having taught composition at DePaul for the past 26 years, Flynn will retire from the university this June but will continue to write music.
