Linda Burman-Hall to Perform at April 12 DePaul School of Music McGuckin Harpsichord Series Concert
The Charles E. McGuckin Harpsichord Recital Series concert at DePaul University’s School of Music will feature a performance by dynamic harpsichordist Linda Burman-Hall at 8 p.m. April 12 in the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave. A reception will follow the free, public concert.
Burman-Hall, director of the Lux Musica ensemble and the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, will perform a program of works by 17th century composers Handel and Richard, as well as 20th century music by the late American composer Lou Harrison. The event is part of DePaul’s United Sounds of America festival, a 30-concert celebration of American music sponsored by the School of Music from March to June.
In the spirit of the festival, Burman-Hall will present a tribute to Harrison, a colorful California composer, during the concert. Harrison, 85, a maverick musician who championed world music, died Feb. 9.
Burman-Hall plays a wide repertoire of early and contemporary music. Her festival appearances include the Carmel Bach Festival, E. Nakamichi Baroque Festival, Berkeley Early Music Festival, Aston Magna and American Musicological Society. She has been featured in concerts at the Getty, de Young and Huntington museums and on local and national radio. She has performed with Chanticleer, America’s premiere vocal ensemble, as well as the American Baroque Ensemble and the Portland Baroque Orchestra. Burman-Hall can be heard on recordings on the Kleos, Helicon, Centaur, Wildboar and New Albion labels, with new releases expected this year on the Golden Horn and MSR labels. Burman-Hall teaches music theory, harpsichord, chamber music and world music courses at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
The McGuckin Harpsichord Recital Series is underwritten by Palos Heights resident Marie McGuckin, a 1964 School of Music alumna, and is named in honor of her late husband, Charles, a former Chicago public school principal and 1956 graduate of DePaul’s School of Education. The School of Music’s double manual Martin harpsichord is a gift from Mrs. McGuckin. For more information about the concert, call 773/325-7260.
