WGN-TV Reporter Who Covered Iraq Conflict Will Discuss Ethics And The Media At DePaul Business Ethics Institute Forum Sept. 24

Reporter Chuck Coppola, who covered the war in Iraq for WGN-TV and other Tribune Co.-owned broadcast stations, will discuss ethics and the media during a free forum open to students and the public at DePaul University Sept. 24.

Sponsored by DePaul’s Institute for Business & Professional Ethics (IBPE), Coppola’s presentation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at DePaul’s Lewis Center, 23 E. Jackson Blvd., Room 241.

Coppola, an Emmy award winning broadcast journalist, will discuss ethical issues involving war coverage as well as conflicts of interest that arise in covering stories at home in Chicago. DePaul Communications Professor Bruce Evensen, a former Middle East Bureau Chief for Christian Broadcasting Network and author of three books on journalism history and media ethics, will host the discussion.

“What we hope to do is push students to think more about the responsibilities of the media and how the media can report with integrity,” said Patricia Werhane, Wicklander Chair in Business Ethics at DePaul and director of the IBPE. Werhane said the issues extend beyond war coverage to how the media covers political, economic and other news as well as how people respond to this reporting.

Formed in 1985 and guided by a board drawn from Chicago’s corporate community, the IBPE fosters educational programs and public forums that explore and promote ethical practices in organizations. The IBPE sponsors ethics-related panel discussions and lecture series for students, faculty and business professionals. Among these programs is an annual rotating ethics conference with DePaul, St. John’s and Niagara universities on business ethics teaching and training. Board members and faculty associated with the center also serve as resources on ethics issues to DePaul’s business education programs and the corporate community.
