Tony Fitzpatrick Opens 2003-2004 Season At DePaul Art Museum

The DePaul University Art Museum, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave., will open its 2003-2004 season with an exhibition titled “Remembered City: Prints and Drawings by Tony Fitzpatrick,” which runs Sept. 12 to Nov. 26.

A celebrated Chicago printmaker and poet, Fitzpatrick makes images that reflect the gritty surroundings of his childhood spent on Chicago’s South Side. Drawings and prints in the exhibition show readily identifiable Chicago subject matter and offer straightforward social commentary on such issues as the devastating effects of drug abuse. “Tony Fitzpatrick’s works incorporate images and motifs of his intimate observances of urban life, such as weeds growing from cracked sidewalks or the crumbling texture of dilapidated houses,” said Laura Fatemi, assistant director of the museum.

A prolific poet as well, Fitzpatrick discusses many of his poems in an interview with Studs Terkel that is included in the 24-page catalogue that accompanies the exhibit. Fitzpatrick will lecture at DePaul Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. A panel discussion on “Art and Life in the City” will be held Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Center.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 12. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Museum hours are: Mon. – Thurs., 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fri., 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sat. and Sun., noon to 5 p.m. For more information about “Remembered City” and future exhibitions of the DePaul Art Museum, call 773/325-7506.
