FBI, United Airlines and ACLU Officials Will Discuss The Ethics of Post 9/11 Security Profiling at Forum Oct. 30
Representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United Airlines’ safety office and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will join a DePaul University law professor in exploring the ethics of security profiling in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks during an forum sponsored by DePaul’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics (IBPE) Oct. 30.
The panel discussion, entitled “Profiling the Melting Pot in the Wake of 9/11,” will be held at the DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Room 8005, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The free event is open to students and the public. The panelists will be: Patrick Daly, assistant special agent in charge, FBI; James Krupkowski, principle legal council, FBI; Capt. Hank Krakowski, vice president of safety, United Airlines; Edwin C. Yohnka, director of communications, ACLU; and Leonard Cavise, DePaul professor of law.
“Part of the mission of the Institute for Business and Professional Ethics is to introduce real world issues into the classroom,” said IBPE Chair Richard Panico, who is president and CEO of Integrated Project Management Co., Inc., based in Burr Ridge, Ill. “For decision-makers, the 9/11 terrorist attacks have brought to the forefront the difficult and controversial issue of balancing constitutionally protected freedoms with the need to provide security. Our goal is to provide the ethical perspective for examining this issue.”
DePaul’s College of Commerce and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences co-founded the IBPE (www.depaul.edu/ethics) in 1985 as a forum for exploring and furthering ethical practices in organizations.
The mission of the IBPE is to encourage ethical deliberation in decision-makers by stirring their moral conscience and imagination. The institute’s board consists of area business executives and ethics officers, who are available as ethics education resources for the university, as well as DePaul professors.
The IBPE sponsors ethics-related panel discussions and lecture series, including an annual rotating ethics conference with St. John’s and Niagara universities on business ethics teaching and training. It also presents an annual award to one Chicago-area company that exemplifies good ethical practices.
