DePaul Panel To Discuss Political, Religious, Military War Issues

DePaul University has assembled a panel of faculty experts to explore issues surrounding the United States’ possible attack of Iraq. “As We Approach War…Religious, Political and Military Considerations” will be held Oct. 3, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the Thomas Levan Center, 2322 N. Kenmore Ave., Room 100.

Panelist include:

· Thomas W. O’Brien, assistant professor, religious studies. O’Brien teaches courses in Catholic social thought and will present the Catholic church’s position on war and peace.

· Aminah McCloud, associate professor of religious studies and managing editor of the Journal of Islamic Law and Culture, will present the Islamic philosophy on war and how American Muslims feel about the potential war with Iraq.

· Thomas Mockaitis, professor of history and terrorism expert, will talk about Iraq and the war on terror, as well as political and military considerations of intervention.

· Major Tony Vega, an assistant professor of military science, will discuss weaponry and what kinds of strategies and operations might be employed in war against a Middle Eastern country.

· Sgt. Allen Dennison, an Army ROTC instructor, will discuss how a soldier prepares for war physically and psychologically.

· The panel moderator is the Rev. James Halstead, O.S.A., chair of DePaul’s religious studies department. The aim of this panel discussion is to serve as a teach-in for DePaul’s students, many of whom, according to Fr. Halstead, have expressed strong feelings about the threat of war and have mixed feelings about serving their country in active military duty.
