DePaul University School of Music to Host Trumpet Symposium
A duo of well-known Chicago professional trumpeters will host a symposium for trumpet musicians from across the nation at DePaul University’s School of Music, 804 W. Belden Ave., from June 8 to 11.
DePaul School of Music faculty members John Hagstrom, second trumpet for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), and Matthew Lee, trumpeter for the Chicago Brass Quintet and Millar Brass Ensemble, will lead the comprehensive workshop. The symposium will feature a master class at 2 p.m., June 9, with special guest Adolph “Bud” Herseth, CSO principal trumpet emeritus. Generally recognized as one of the world’s greatest symphonic trumpeters, Herseth retired in 2001 after more than 50 years as principal trumpeter for the CSO.
Fifteen talented trumpeters from across the country were chosen to participate in the full symposium based on audition tapes. As many as 100 additional trumpet players are expected to participate as auditors of the workshop sessions on June 9.
Participants will perform orchestral excerpts and receive individualized instruction. The program’s master classes will teach them fundamental skills for successful performances, audition preparation and how to make musical and personal decisions that promote professional respect. As part of the symposium, Hagstrom and Lee will join participants, the university’s trumpet faculty and the DePaul Trumpet Ensemble in performing a program of chamber music at 5 p.m., June 10, in the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave. This performance is free and open to the public.
