Congressman/Judge Abner Mikva and Pulitzer Prize Winning Authors William Kennedy & Jack Rakove Will Speak at Commencement

Former congressman and federal judge Abner Mikva, who served as White House counsel, and Pulitzer Prize-winning authors William Kennedy and Jack N. Rakove are among the speakers who will deliver addresses at a series of commencement ceremonies for DePaul University and Barat College in May and June.

Nine DePaul colleges and schools will award diplomas to approximately 5,000 students at graduation ceremonies that will be held on May 12, May 19, June 15 and June 16.

Here is the line-up of ceremonies and speakers:

May 12, 1:30 p.m.: Barat College Commencement: Jack N. Rakove, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author, will deliver the keynote address at the commencement ceremony for Barat College, a small liberal arts school in Lake Forest that formed an alliance with DePaul last year. Rakove, the Coe professor of history and American studies at Stanford University, has authored several books on the early American republic. In 1997, Rakove received the Pulitzer Prize in history for his book “Original Meanings: Politics and Ideas in the Making of the Constitution,” which argues that the practice of interpreting the Constitution by a fixed set of Framers’ intentions should not be the only approach to settling today’s judicial questions. The ceremony will take place on the Barat front lawn, 700 E. Westleigh Drive, in Lake Forest.

May 19th, 2 p.m.: DePaul College Of Law Commencement: Former Congressman, White House Counsel and Federal Appellate Judge Abner Mikva will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree from DePaul’s College of Law at the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago.

Mikva served as White House Counsel in the Clinton administration after being appointed to the federal bench and was later elevated to chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1955 and served five consecutive terms before being elected to the United States Congress. Mikva currently co-chairs, with former Ill. Governor James Edgar, a task force on political representation in Illinois, and he is a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School.

June 15, 9 a.m.: DePaul School of Education Commencement: Carol D. Lee, associate professor of education at Northwestern University, will deliver the commencement address for the School of Education graduation ceremony at the Civic Opera House. Lee is a widely published expert on urban education and how culture affects learning and literacy. She currently is developing computer-based tools to support student reading and to assist educators teaching reading to underachieving middle and high school students.

June 15, noon: Combined DePaul School of Music and Theatre School Commencements: Internationally acclaimed composer Philip Glass will receive an honorary degree at DePaul’s School of Music and Theatre School commencement ceremony. Glass has earned international acclaim for his innovative music, which has found its expression in concert performance, theater, opera, dance and film. The ceremony will be held at the Civic Opera House.

June 15, 3 p.m.: DePaul School for New Learning Commencement: William Kennedy, whose 1983 novel “Ironweed” earned a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critic’s Circle Award for fiction, will deliver the commencement address and earn an honorary degree at the graduation ceremony for DePaul’s School for New Learning, which caters to the needs of adult learners. Born in 1928 in Albany, N.Y., Kennedy has written a series of novels and stories that capture the sights, personalities and nuances of his hometown. His books include “O Albany,” “The Ink Truck,” “Billy Phelan’s Greatest Game,” “Legs,” “Quinn’s Book” and “The Flaming Corsage.” Kennedy also penned the “Ironweed” movie script and co-wrote, with Francis Ford Coppola, the screenplay for the film “The Cotton Club.”

June 16th, 9 a.m.: DePaul College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Commencement: Daniel Libeskind, an internationally known figure in architectural practice and urban design, will deliver the graduation address and receive an honorary degree at the Liberal Arts & Sciences Commencement. The ceremony will be held at the Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Road in Rosemont, Ill.

June 16, 12:30 p.m.: DePaul School of Computer Science, Telecommunication and Information Systems Commencement. No speaker has been scheduled for this graduation ceremony, which will be held at the Allstate Arena.

June 16th, 4 p.m.: DePaul College of Commerce Commencement: His Excellency Abdulla Hassan Saif, Minister of Finance and National Economy for Bahrain, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree from the College of Commerce, which launched a MBA program in the Middle East island nation of Bahrain this year. Richard Driehaus, a graduate of the college who is CEO of Chicago-based Driehaus Capital Management, Inc., and Stephen Ross, the Franco Modigliani Professor of Financial Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also will receive honorary degrees from the college. The ceremony will be held at the Allstate Arena.

Todd Beamer Tribute: In addition to graduation speaker biographies, this year’s DePaul commencement program booklet will contain a written tribute to alumnus Todd Beamer, 32, of Cranbury, N.J. A 1993 DePaul MBA graduate who grew up in Glen Ellyn, Beamer was among the heroes of United Flight 93 who tried to overpower hijackers aboard their aircraft on Sept. 11. Beamer, who uttered the now famous “Let’s Roll!” rallying cry to his fellow passengers before they took action, died when the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
