Glen Weissenberger Named Dean Of DePaul College Of Law

Glen Weissenberger, Judge Joseph P. Kinneary Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati, has been named dean of the DePaul University College of Law. Weissenberger, who will begin his tenure at DePaul in July, will succeed Wayne Lewis, who has served as acting dean since June 2001. “Glen Weissenberger is an established attorney and an accomplished academic author who has been recognized for his teaching excellence,” said Richard Meister, DePaul executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “We welcome him and support his academic leadership as the College of Law moves forward.”

Weissenberger, 56, brings to the deanship a temperate mix of legal expertise and business savvy. He is a recognized legal authority on evidence, civil commitment and the insanity defense, and he has earned a reputation throughout legal education as the scholarly entrepreneur behind the development of a series of casebooks, anthologies and texts that can be found in law school classrooms across the country.

“Glen will assume the deanship at a time when the College of Law is working to increase its visibility and reputation, while at the same time strengthening its ability to train capable and dedicated lawyers,” said Lewis. “His fresh ideas and solid background will go far to help us continue to improve the College of Law for our students and further our contributions to the legal community and society.”

As an author, Weissenberger has penned numerous works including “Weissenberger’s Federal Evidence, Fourth Edition,” which is commonly cited in law review articles and texts on evidence law. A companion work, “Weissenberger’s Federal Evidence Courtroom Manual,” has been published annually since 1992. His early law review articles on landlord and tenant law are currently excerpted in virtually every property law casebook.

As a businessman, Weissenberger has worked as an editorial consultant for Anderson Publishing Co., a Cincinnati-based legal publisher, since 1987. In that capacity, he has been the driving force behind the development of more than 150 titles for the law school division of Anderson. The books are used in nearly all U. S. law schools.

Weissenberger joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati in 1975 as an assistant law professor. During his tenure, he has served as special counsel to the university president, director of the university’s Center for Studies in Professional Skills and law professor. A trustee for the Glenn M. Weaver Foundation and Glenn M. Weaver Institute of Law and Psychiatry since 1977, Weissenberger was an associate with the Cincinnati law firm of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister prior to beginning his academic career. He also was of counsel for the Cincinnati law firm of Lloyd & Weissenberger from 1981 to 1997. Weissenberger earned a law degree from Harvard in 1972 and a B. A. in philosophy from the University of Cincinnati in 1969. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Ohio State Bar Foundation Outstanding Research Award in 2001, the University of Cincinnati Faculty Achievement Award in 1995, and the Jerome P. Goldman Prize for Teaching Excellence, University of Cincinnati in 1977 and 1980.

Weissenberger, whose hobbies have included performing as a magician and who has served as legal counsel for the International Brotherhood of Magicians, is a native New Yorker. He grew up in Manhasset before moving to Cincinnati. The father of two daughters and one son looks forward to making Chicago his home and steering the College of Law’s future.

“One of my major goals will be to develop new resources to reward faculty and fund legal education so we can attract quality students who may be picking other law schools simply because they are in a position to offer more scholarship dollars,” said Weissenberger. “Advances in technology and changes in the law also present a challenge. I want to be a collaborative dean who works with faculty, students and staff to achieve goals.”
