DePaul Students To Participate In “Christmas In April” Home Restoration Volunteer Project

Campus Chapters of Habitat for Humanity and Alpha Sigma Alpha to Take Part

A group of DePaul University students will help to make one south suburban woman’s world a little brighter this weekend.

The DePaul chapters of Habitat for Humanity and Alpha Sigma Alpha will participate in the citywide “Christmas in April” program April 27. A group of 30 volunteers will travel from campus to south suburban Markham to rehabilitate a house in the 16500 block of S. Wolcott Avenue by painting, making necessary repairs to the structure and performing needed yard work tasks. The goal is to make the home safe, warm, dry and more livable for the residents.

Christmas in April is a nationwide volunteer project in which participants restore homes for poor, elderly and disabled people. Approximately 5,000 volunteers are expected to participate in the event in Chicago, with more than 250,000 volunteers expected to participate in 865 cities across the country.

DePaul is the largest private university in Chicago and the largest Catholic university in the United States. The university enrolls a richly diverse population of 21,363 students who take classes on two city and six suburban campuses. DePaul was founded in 1898 by the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers (the Congregation of the Mission), a Roman Catholic religious community that continues the mission and values of Vincent de Paul, the 17th century French saint. The university emphasizes academic excellence, service to the community, access to education and respect for the individual.
