Astronaut And Moonwalker Charles Duke To Lecture At DePaul University April 23
Tenth Man to Walk on the Moon Marks 30th Anniversary of his Apollo 16 Mission
Apollo astronaut and moonwalker Gen. Charles M. Duke, Jr., will lecture at DePaul University at 7:30 p.m. April 23 in the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave.
Duke’s appearance at DePaul marks the 30th anniversary of his historic Apollo 16 mission to the moon. It was on April 16, 1972, that astronauts Duke, Thomas K. Mattingly and John W. Young began an 11-day mission that included 71 hours of moon exploration from April 20 to 23. Duke became the tenth of 12 persons to walk on the moon – only nine of whom are alive today. Duke served as lunar module pilot during the landing, and his mission returned more than 213 pounds of rock and soil samples for study on Earth.
A former Air Force test pilot and retired brigadier general, Duke was selected as a National Aeronautics Space Administration astronaut in 1966 astronaut class. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957. He is currently a motivational speaker and president of Charlie Duke Enterprises. He is also founder of Duke Ministry for Christ.
In addition to recollections and thoughts about his Apollo mission, Duke will talk about the importance of leadership, character and service for today’s youth. He also will answer questions from the audience.
The lecture is free and open to the public. However, reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 773/325-2577 or 773/325-4040.
