David Cates Replaces Mitzi Meyerson at April 6 School Of Music McGuckin Harpsichord Concert

Harpsichordist David Cates will replace Mitzi Meyerson as the featured performer at DePaul University’s School of Music McGuckin Harpsichord Recital Series concert on April 6. Meyerson was forced to cancel her appearance due to her husband’s recent heart attack.

The free public concert, the second in a three-year annual recital series, will be performed at 8 p.m. in the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave. A reception will be held immediately following the performance.

Cates has recorded three critically acclaimed CDs on the Wildboar label, one featuring the works of Johann Jacob Froberger and the other two featuring the music of Bach. He studied piano with Easley Blackwood at the University of Chicago and with Jacob Lateiner of the Julliard School of Music in New York. While a pianist, he specialized in the music of Charles Ives and the songs of Schubert. He began to focus on the harpsichord in 1990 and has studied with Roger Goodman of DePaul’s School of Music and Edward Parmentier, a University of Michigan music professor and noted interpreter of early keyboard music.

Cates will perform on DePaul’s double manual Martin harpsichord, a gift from Marie McGuckin, a 1964 School of Music alumna and Palos Heights resident. The event is underwritten by McGuckin and honors her late husband, Charles, a former Chicago public school principal and a 1956 graduate of DePaul’s School of Education.
