William Martin Named To Senior Diversity Post At DePaul

Seasoned Human Resource Executive to Assume DePaul Duties in January

William F. Martin, a clinical associate professor at Tulane University Medical Center, has been named senior executive for institutional diversity at DePaul University. Martin will be responsible for building alliances with various university constituencies to maximize diversity throughout the entire DePaul community. He also will serve as an advisor on issues of diversity while designing and implementing programs that help the university build stronger diversity relationships with business, civic and religious communities in Chicago. He will begin his tenure at DePaul in mid-January.

“The strength of our nation is its diversity and the freedom we have to express our unique perspectives,” said the Rev. John P. Minogue, C.M., university president. “DePaul is committed to building the human capacities that encourage all members of the DePaul community to live the spirit of diversity. Dr. Martin will enable us to further this priority.”

Martin brings to the job a wealth of experience in the areas of human resources management and diversity strategy. He served as director of employee assistance/worksite wellness at Xavier University of Louisiana from 1990 until 1993, where he developed a campus and community-based wellness program for faculty, staff, students and community residents and was awarded a $107,000 grant for the establishment of a comprehensive substance abuse prevention program.

Martin was the manager of human resources/employment and training from 1993 until 1994 at Tulane University Hospital, where he initiated a human resources development and diversity recruitment, retention and cultural competency process for faculty, staff and students. He also developed and executed a global diversity initiative for the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where he worked as director of human resources/workforce diversity from 1994 until 1996.

Martin currently is a clinical associate professor in the Tulane University Medical Center, where he teaches executive and graduate level courses in health care and human resources management, marketing research and organizational behavior. During his tenure at the medical center he implemented an innovative faculty recruitment advertising campaign that increased minority faculty. As an independent consultant, he designed a diversity and cultural competency management process for a nationally recognized health care system that is rated No. 1 in the nation in patient satisfaction.

A native of Washington, D.C., Martin earned a bachelor’s in biology from Xavier University in 1982, a master’s in psychology from Catholic University of America in 1985, a master’s in public health education from Rutgers School of Medicine in 1988 and a doctorate in psychology from Rutgers in 1989. Martin also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Primary Health Care Psychology at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, Mich., from 1989-1990.

He is the recipient of a number of honors and awards, including being named one of Tulane’s best teachers of the year in 1998 and one of the best faculty members of the year in 1999. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Health Service Executives and the Society of Human Resources Management.
