DePaul School of Music Sponsors Workshop Jan. 11-13 To Help Musicians and Music Students Conquer Performance Stress
For musicians, the key to a successful performance is to not only to master the music but also to conquer performance stress.
Area musicians, music students and music teachers can learn about controlling audition and concert stress at “Learning to Perform Your Best—A Performance Enhancement Workshop,” offered by the DePaul University School of Music at its Recital Hall, 804 W. Belden Ave., Jan. 11 through 13.
The workshop will be presented by Bill Williams, solo trumpet of the Berne Symphony in Switzerland and a veteran of several major orchestras in the United States and abroad. An alumnus of the Eastman School of Music, Williams has studied performance enhancement techniques with Don Greene, author of “Fight Your Fear and Win,” and assists Greene with his performance optimization seminar at The Julliard School in New York.
The DePaul workshop will address various topics, such as identifying the sources of stress in performance, strategies for dealing with stress and techniques for optimizing performance and audition preparation. Participants are asked to bring their instruments so they can perform musical excerpts and try the techniques learned.
“Endorsed by many of Chicago’s finest musicians, this workshop is valuable for both performers and teachers who want to help prepare their students for the rigors of a performance career,” said Don DeRoche, chair of performance studies at DePaul’s School of Music.
The workshop begins the evening of Jan. 11, runs all day Jan. 12, and concludes at 4 p.m. Jan. 13. The fee is $100 per person. For more information or to register, call DeRoche at (773) 325-1036.
