DePaul School Of Music Will Present Concert Of American Music Nov. 10 To Benefit Red Cross Disaster Fund For Terrorist Victims

Faculty and students of DePaul University’s School of Music will present a concert of American music Nov. 10 to benefit a fund for victims affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave., on DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus.

The program will include choral, classical and jazz music written by American composers Aaron Copland, Norman Dello Joio and Randall Thompson, among others. Performers will include celebrated pianist and Grammy Award nominee Eteri Andjaparidze, the DePaul University Singers and student soloists. Andjaparidze, who joined DePaul’s music faculty this fall, will perform “Mood of a New Yorker” and other jazz works by Zez Confrey as a tribute to the terror victims at the World Trade Center.

“We chose a program of music that is uplifting,” said Associate Professor of Music Clayton Parr, who is director of DePaul’s choral program and organizer of the event. Parr said the program also was chosen carefully to educate the students about how music can reflect world events. “The reason we decided to present this concert is not only because we are trying to find a way to respond to the world situation, but also because an important part of learning to be an artist is to see that art is not created in a vacuum.”

The suggested minimum donation at the door will be $5. All concert proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which benefits victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that claimed lives in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
