DePaul’s CTI Distinguished Lecturer Series Hosts Two Technology Leaders October 19 And November 2
Two of the top minds in the technology industry will speak as part of the 2001-2002 Distinguished Lecturer Series at DePaul University’s School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI) this fall.
The lectures are free and open to the public. Both will be held in the DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., 8th floor conference center, at 6 p.m. A reception with the speaker will follow each event.
§ October 19: Understanding Behavior in UML: A Compositional Semantics of Statecharts Rance Cleaveland, CEO of Reactive Systems, Inc., and a professor of computer science at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, will speak about Universal Modeling Language (UML) and its potential for alleviating the difficulty in building and maintaining software systems. Modeling notations and their relationship to Statecharts, a visual language for specifying reactive system behavior, also will be explored.
§ November 2: Asynchronous Learning Networks: The Theory and Practice of Collaborative Learning Online
Starr Roxanne Hiltz, distinguished professor of computer and information sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, will discuss the results of two decades of research on the effectiveness of learning networks that use software and pedagogy designed to encourage and support group work and discussion online as a central part of a course. The keys to designing an effective online curriculum will be highlighted, as will the pros and cons of teaching via computer networks.
