Math Innovator And Civil Rights Leader To Receive Honorary Degree From DePaul’s College Of Liberal Arts & Sciences

Robert Moses, pioneering civil rights leader and nationally recognized educator, will receive an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters at DePaul University’s 103rd Commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The commencement exercises will be held at 9 a.m. June 17 at the Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Rd., Rosemont.

Moses is the founder of the Algebra Project, Inc., a highly successful, national math literacy program aimed at helping low income students and students of color overcome barriers to mathematical excellence. Moses was a pivotal organizer in the Civil Rights movement – serving as field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and director of its Mississippi Project.

He was recognized as the driving force behind the Mississippi Freedom Party, which challenged the regular delegates for the state at the 1994 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City. Moses, 66, is among Time Magazine’s “100 Innovators: The Next Wave.” He is also co-author of “Radical Equations: Math Literacy and Civil Rights,” a book tracing his experiences of breaking social and educational barriers. Moses will also deliver the commencement address.

DePaul University Student Overcomes Debilitating Physical Challenges To Earn Poli Sci Degree With Honors

Sean Stephenson was born with a rare bone disorder and was not expected to live more than 24 hours. Twenty-one years later, he has accomplished more than most people three times his age, and he’s done it against the odds and from a wheelchair. On June 17, Sean will receive a bachelor’s degree in political science, with academic honors, from DePaul University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

This is a victory in itself for a young man whose growth has been stunted by osteogenesis imperfecta, a disease that has limited his mobility and caused his bones to become so brittle that they have fractured more than 200 times. The commencement ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. at Allstate Arena, 6920 S. Mannheim Rd., Rosemont.

This year, Sean published a book, “How Youth Can Succeed,” a guide for young people that demonstrates the power of visualization. Among his many leadership roles, Sean is an active member of Pi Sigma Alpha fraternity for academic excellence in political science and has served as a congressional and White House intern.
