Welsh Male Choir To Give Concert At St. Vincent's Church

The Blaenavon Male Voice Choir, from Blaenavon, Wales, United Kingdom, will give a free concert at 7:30 p.m. August 7 at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 1010 W. Webster St.

The 40-voice group, under the direction of Gareth Whitcombe, is one of the finest examples of the centuries-old tradition of Welsh male choir singing. This is the group's only Chicago appearance on its North American tour, which stops in Toronto and Detroit as well. The group performs a wide variety of selections in English, Welsh and other languages, and soloists also will be featured.

The concert is sponsored by the DePaul University Choral Ensembles, directed by Clayton Parr, associate professor of music and director of choral activities for the DePaul University School of Music. Parr first became acquainted with the group during a trip to Wales in 1997.

"Singing is a way of life in Wales, and these men sing with musical accuracy and a great spirit," says Parr. "I'm looking forward to hearing them again."
