DePaul Volunteers To Perform Community Service Work At Sites Across Chicago May 6

DePaul's Community Service Day will get underway at the Lincoln Park Campus beginning with a rally at 9:30 a.m. in Alumni Hall, 1011 W. Belden Ave. The rally marks the last public event in the hall, which is scheduled for demolition this spring. The volunteers will board 15 buses at 10 a.m. and head to 45 sites around Chicago. After an on-site orientation, volunteers will work from about 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

University students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends will participate in a range of volunteer projects at inner-city Catholic schools and parishes, public parks, community centers and senior citizen housing complexes around the city. Activities at the various sites include:

·   Outdoor cleaning and sprucing at Hales Franciscan High School, 4930 S. Cottage Grove in the Kenwood area. About 20 DePaul volunteers, including the Rev. John P. Minogue, C.M., president of DePaul will work with students and staff from the school.

·   Installing a fence around a community garden at the Howard Area Community Center, 7648 N. Paulina in Rogers Park and cleaning the garden and an adjacent park. Painting, flower planting and assisting with the coordination of a couple of community recognition programs will also take place at this site.

·   Scraping, priming and painting windows at St. Mark School, 2510 W. Cortez St. in Humboldt Park. Twenty volunteers will refurbish windows and clean up the churchyard shrubbery.

·   Sprucing up the shoreline and picking up litter at Marquette Park, 6734 S. Kedzie in the Chicago Lawn area. About 40 volunteers will work the site.

·   Taking part in a march and demonstration for universal health care for kids and providing child care at a conference of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless at the Hilton and Towers Hotel, 720 S. Michigan Ave. About 40 DePaul volunteers will march with members of the coalition. The march gets underway at 11 a.m.

The day will end with a picnic beginning at 3 p.m. on the Lincoln Park Campus quadrangle at Seminary and Fullerton avenues. Musical entertainment will be provided by Maggie Speaks, a quarter of acoustic guitarists.
