DePaul Women's Track Team Injured In Accident Saturday

Three members of the DePaul University a women's track team were injured, one seriously, in an accident on Interstate 65 in Jasper County, Ind. about 8:30 a.m. Saturday as the team traveled to the Stan Lyons Invitational hosted by Bulter University at a sporting facility in Indianapolis.

Sophomore Montia Gardner of Gary is undergoing treatment at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. Her teammates, a trainer and the assistant coach, who was driving the team's van, were treated for cuts and bruises and then released from Jasper County Hospital. Following their release, they traveled to Lafayette to be with Gardner.

The team left campus about 6 a.m. in snowy conditions. About two and a half hours into the trip, their van overturned on I-65. No other vehicles were involved. The van was driven by Talese Branch, the team's assistant coach.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Montia, her family, teammates and coaches, who are all rallying around her for support during her recovery," said James R. Doyle, DePaul's vice president for student affairs.

Team members who were injured are Susan Stoffel and Megan Greeley. Julie Skowronski, graduate assistant for sports medicine and a trainer for the team, also suffered minor injuries.

Additional members of the women's team and part of the men's team were scheduled to leave for the meet later Saturday morning, but did not go. In all, eight members of the women's team and six from the men's team had planned to attend the event. DePaul officially withdrew from the meet.
