Msgr. John Egan To Receive Award From St. Peter's Church

Msgr. John J. Egan, special assistant to the president of DePaul University on community affairs, has been selected to receive the Pax et Bonum Award from St. Peter’s Church at a luncheon Oct. 5. The annual award honors someone who personifies the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi.

Egan will be the 10th recipient of the award, whose name is derived from a blessing of St. Francis which calls for peace and all good things.

"Jack Egan’s life has been a blessing to the people of Chicago," said the Rev. Thomas P. Aldworth, O.F.M., pastor of St. Peter’s, 110 W. Madison St. "He has been a mentor to an enormous number of church leaders."

The noon luncheon will be held at the Palmer House-Hilton, 17 E. Monroe St. After receiving his award, Egan will offer reflections on his life and ministry.

Egan has played an important role in fostering lay Catholic spirituality, and has been a lifelong advocate of civil rights and the rights of workers through labor unions. Since 1987, he has headed DePaul's office of community affairs, with his long-time assistant Peggy Roach.

St. Francis was known for standing up for what is right and reaching out to the disenfranchised and people at the margins of society. He preached that all creation was a part of his family and considered himself a little brother to all God’s people.
