Flutist Robert Dick Will Perform His New Composition "Infrared" With Flute Students At New Music DePaul Concert Feb. 11

Robert Dick, one of the most influential flutists and composers of the 20th century, will perform his new composition, "Infrared," written for flute students at DePaul University's School of Music, at a concert with the students on Feb.11. The free public concert, part of the New Music DePaul series, begins at 8 p.m at DePaul's Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave.

The concert will be the culmination of Dick's Feb. 7-11 residency at the School of Music, where he will work with student musicians and composers on performance and compositional techniques. During his residency he will teach "Infared" to16 flute students who will perform the piece with him at the concert.

Dick also will play a variety of his other compositions during the two-hour concert. In addition, the program includes pianist and composer Kurt Westerberg, who will premier his solo piano work, "Mraz," named for the Serbo-Croatian word for frost.

Internationally known for his experimental and versatile flute work, Dick was invited to teach and perform at the school by faculty member Mary Stolper, principal flute of the Concertante di Chicago and the Chicago Sinfonietta chamber orchestras.

"My goal was to expose our students to one of the most famous and exceptional flutist-composers of the 20th century," Stolper said. "I want them to learn from a master and carry his lessons into the 21st century."

A native of New York who now lives in Switzerland, Dick has led a multifaceted musical career as a composer, improviser, master class teacher, recording artist and author. He has even worked to re-design the flute itself.

He has performed his music as a soloist and with small ensembles throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, playing a full range of flutes, from the giant, stand-up contrabass flutes to bass flutes, alto flutes, concert flutes and piccolos. A prolific recording artist, Dick has released CDs featuring his own compositions and the works of a variety of classical, jazz, blues and rock artists.

Dick's concert is the second in this season's New Music DePaul series. The final concert will be presented May 12 and will feature the experimental music of bass clarinetist Gene Coleman and his Ensemble Noamnesia.

New Music DePaul, the contemporary music series sponsored by DePaul's School of Music, presents performances by distinguished guest artists, DePaul music faculty members and alumni who play professionally with prestigious area orchestras and ensembles.
